The End of the Line, c'est une descente dans les abysses angoissantes d'une réalité cachée : en 2048, si on ne change rien, les espèces de poisson comestible auront disparues des océans.

Suivant le journaliste dans son enquête et ses démarches culottées, le film est une enquête passionnante où l'écologie n'est plus une utopie, mais une nécessité sociale et politique. Dans 35 ans, les pays riches et les pays pauvres devront faire face ensemble eux conséquences de la destruction des espèces marines par les armadas d'embarcation de pêches qui ne respectent ni la science ni la loi.

En2012, les Etats Européens vont devoir ratifier le nouveau traité de pêche commune. Nous pouvons encore éviter le pire, et le film nous explique quelles démarches adopter pour faire changer les choses. En Angleterre, le film a eu un impact tel que de nombreuses firmes de l'industrie alimentaire ont ensuite indiqué leur changement de politique d'achats de poisson.

Un film passionnant de 82 min, disponible dès le 6 juin sur Planète+, puis en DVD le 18 juin et en VOD le 25 juin.

I have worked for 18 months for an online VOD platform and I have to confess that the market is at its early beginnings. First, technologically speaking, the business is going to explode once optical fiber will have equipped much of the European territory. indeed it is hard to make people pay for a film they can't stream correctly because their bandwidth is not broad enough, or they have to download and can only watch it 6h later. Moreover, definition of images remains lower than a Blu-Rays is sound is more than often stereo only. 15% of the users of illegal platforms they they would like to pay if the content would be of higher quality, which confirms the above.

Second, it is very often difficult for a platform to close deals with distributors. As put by Italian Internet service Provider Fastweb in a reflection for Media : "Currently, the new media offers are hindered, inter alia, by the content providers’ commercial practice to sell their works based on exclusive rights or holdbacks clauses, granted in favour of specific players (often in dominant position on old media), thereby preventing the circulation of contents on new platforms. As a consequence, all involved players (new platforms, ISPs and aggregators of content for new media) have serious problems in accessing audiovisual works and therefore satisfying consumers’ demand. The system in place ultimately results in great barriers to entry for the above companies, and an increase of illegal means such as piracy, on the side of consumers". To this you can add that often distributors just don't want to loose their time, and thus their money, dealing with a market that is not generating a huge bunch of money for now.

Of course the deal is different for all well-advised producers that have kept the VOD rights of their film and are thus able to exploit them in an efficient,  multi-territory fashion. And to get in pole-position for when the market really signifies big figures, distributors still need to begin close VOD deals with platforms. This is where we can help - it is part of our consultancy job.

I hope my intervention there will help some of the distributors and guide them through the new galaxy of this business, even if I might be provocative and stire their mind a bit around the idea that VOD will grow big... if the theaters enter the game. You will read on this blog what we learn from this experience. We based our decision o past experiment, noticeably the tour Lug Cinema was organising each year.

But this is also a very important film in general. the outstanding work by Marc Evans, shaping his film with so many sources of images you can't avoid to ask your self about the responsability of documentary directors in front of so many informations sources nowadays, packed with intelligence and sensibility, focuses on death penalty.

I have been a long time fighter for this basic human rights of not being killed by the country you live in 9or any country, but that is another story). You can agree or disagree, it is your moral choice and this i not the place to discuss these important issues. My point is, the film is so intelligent that it doesn't give its spectators any lecture, but just shows what death penalty, and specifically the case discussed in the film, on the social and political history of a country.

Last thursday, Georgia executed Troy Davis. In Texas, 4 execeutions were scheduled in 8 days (Perry, the governor there, is candidate for presidential election). On 9th November, Hank Skinner might be executed. Etc etc. With the US elections approaching, one can see the execution are not juridical decision anymore, but political ones, and this is a real danger to democracy.

The main reason to disappoint potential customers - apart of a deep sense of honesty - is to flag out, as soon as possible, that they have to keep at least €40,000 to generate one 35mm print from a digital source. There are one, easily understandable reasons for indie film : indie films means indie cinemas, and most of them have not been able to bare the cost of equipping their theaters with D-cinema yet, whatever the territory. This is simple. Call out the manager of 10 locals cinemas in your area. You will have the same answer. Maximum 2 out of 10 are equipped.

Not keeping this amount of money from your production budget (or any DIY distribution budget) would :

- jeopardise (a lot of) screenings opportunities
- jeopardise sales opportunities (indie film also mean indie distributors unlikely to pay this amount of money to generate a 35 mm print on top of minimum guarantee and all release costs)
- disable a whole part of any DIY distribution plan you would have made for your film.

It will already be a hard work to get your film programed in theaters, don't cut your market by 80 % !
